Dim Mak Pressure Point
Lung 1: Two Purposes

The Two Dragons of Dim Mak describe the two purposes of pressure points in the martial arts. One is that of healing, the other is self-defense.

Whilst not all pressure points can effectively be used for both self-defense and healing, and the points used for these purposes have changed over time, many pressure points are valuable both in terms of their defensive properties and their healing aspects.

One point hit a certain way in a defensive situation can disableyour opponent immediately and/or cause later injury and damage. The same point manipulated in other, more gentle ways can havebeneficial results. There are many points that can be used toillustrate this duality of dim mak.

Pressure Point Lung 1 Zhong Fu

One such point is Lung 1 Zhong Fu. Lung 1 is the first surfacepoint of Chi circulation through the meridian system, it is alsounique in that two Yin organs meet at this point. Couple this with its connection to other points through deep pathways in the body and other meridians and you can begin to understand why this point is important when used for self-defense.

Not only does an impact to this point have a major effect on theflow of blood and Chi but also hitting this point produces damageto the physical structure of the body, including muscles, jointsand bones in the area of the impact.

This can result in damage to the lungs including shortness of breath, coughing and constriction of the chest and lungs, and cause rebellion of stomach Chi resulting in vomiting.

Damage to Zhong Fu can also cause obstructed urination, nasal obstruction, nosebleeds and problems with the voice and throat.

As debilitating as contact with this point can be, when manipulated by acupressure massage it also has a range of therapeutic rather than injurious consequences and can be very powerful in helping resolve disorders of the Lung.

Manipulated appropriately Lung 1 Zhong Fu can treat pain associated with the lungs and surrounding areas such as chest, shoulder, back and breathing difficulties. It has also shown to assist with bronchitis, pneumonia, sore throats, nasal congestion, night sweats, limb swelling and insomnia.

If combined with the manipulation of certain other points, Lung 1 Zhong Fu can also assist in the treatment of various stomach disorders such as vomiting, abdominal fullness and difficulties in digesting food.

Lung 1, as with many other dim mak pressure points, demonstratesthe dual purpose behind understanding pressure points as fully aspossible. To only know them in terms of their defensive advantages is to only understand half of dim mak.

To use and understand pressure points fully in the martial arts, one must understand both the healing and self-defense aspects of this art.
